The basis of the economy of the city are: trade, transport and communication, construction. Nur-Sultan ranks second among the regions and cities of Republican importance after Almaty in terms of contribution to the gross product of the trade sector of the economy of Kazakhstan. The combined regional product of the two cities — Alma-ATA and Nur-Sultan-is more than half of the total volume of trade in Kazakhstan. Nur-Sultan also ranks second in the country in terms of retail turnover. Nur-Sultan leads the country in terms of construction rates. For more than five years, the city has been the leader in terms of commissioning of residential buildings.

The industrial production of the city is concentrated mainly in the production of building materials, food/beverages and mechanical engineering. Nur-Sultan occupies a leading position in Kazakhstan in the production of construction metal products, ready-to-use concrete and construction products made of concrete. Also, the share of the city in the production of metal structures, radiators and Central heating boilers and lifting and transport equipment is relatively high.

The GRP of Nur-Sultan for 2019 amounted to 2735 billion tenge (the share of GRP of the city in the GRP of Kazakhstan was 9.2%). Among the regions of Kazakhstan in terms of GRP Nur-Sultan is on the 2nd place.

Despite the fact that Nur-Sultan does not have a resource base, this region is a major center for the development of industry and trade. According to statistics, 72,698 enterprises are registered in the city, including 305 large and 468 medium, 71,925 small. More information can be found in the "Markets" section.

In January-September 2019, industrial enterprises of the city of Nur-Sultan produced products (including small enterprises, subsidiary production, household sector) at current prices by 492.5 billion tenge, which compared to the level of January-September 2018 amounted to 112.9%.

In the manufacturing industry, the volume index in January-September 2019 compared to the level of January-September 2018 amounted to 111.3%. Furniture production increased by 48.2%, production of rubber and plastic products by 36.6%, mechanical engineering by 14.6%.

At the same time, the production of finished metal products, except for machinery and equipment, decreased by 40.0%.

In electricity supply, gas supply, steam and air conditioning, the volume index in January-September 2019 increased by 23.5% to the level of January-September 2018.

In the water supply; Sewerage system, control over the collection and distribution of waste index of physical volume in January-September 2019 to the level of January-September 2018 increased by 7.9%.
