The basis of the economy of the city are: trade, transport and communication, construction. Nur-Sultan ranks second among the regions and cities of Republican importance after Almaty in terms of contribution to the gross product of the trade sector of the economy of Kazakhstan. The combined regional product of the two cities — Alma-ATA and Nur-Sultan-is more than half of the total volume of trade in Kazakhstan. Nur-Sultan also ranks second in the country in terms of retail turnover. Nur-Sultan leads the country in terms of construction rates. For more than five years, the city has been the leader in terms of commissioning of residential buildings.

The industrial production of the city is concentrated mainly in the production of building materials, food/beverages and mechanical engineering. Nur-Sultan occupies a leading position in Kazakhstan in the production of construction metal products, ready-to-use concrete and construction products made of concrete. Also, the share of the city in the production of metal structures, radiators and Central heating boilers and lifting and transport equipment is relatively high.

The GRP of Nur-Sultan in 2019 amounted to 7835 billion tenge. The gross regional product grew by 7.2%. The volume of industrial production increased by 12%. Among the regions of Kazakhstan in terms of GRP, Nur-Sultan is on the 2nd place.

Despite the fact that Nur-Sultan does not have a resource and raw material base, this region is a major center for the development of industry and trade. According to statistics, 72,698 enterprises are registered in the city, including 305 large and 468 medium-sized, 71,925 small. For more information, see the Markets section. 

In January-October 2020, industrial enterprises of the city of Nur-Sultan produced products (including small enterprises, subsidiary production, and the household sector) at current prices for 799.1 billion tenge, which is 103.6% compared to the level of January-October 2019. 

In the manufacturing industry, the index of physical volume in January-October 2020 compared to the level of January-October 2019 was 104.1%. Mechanical engineering production increased by 38.1%, and metallurgical production by 2.8%.

At the same time, the production of paper and paper products decreased by 52.2%, and the production of furniture by 76.3%.

The supply of electricity, gas, steam, hot water and air-conditioned air volume index in January-October 2020 compared to the level of January-October 2019 was 99%.

Water supply; collection, treatment and disposal of waste, activities to eliminate pollution the index of physical volume in January-October 2020 increased by 2.7% compared to the level of January-October 2019.

In 2019, the specified sown area of agricultural crops in the whole city of Nur-Sultan was 1685.4 hectares, which is 3.5 times more than in the previous year. The harvested area of cereals (including rice) and legumes was 1,581 hectares, or 100% of the specified sown area, open ground vegetables - 23.7 hectares and 100%, respectively, potatoes-58.3 hectares and 100%.

The gross harvest of cereals (including rice) and legumes in weight after refinement increased by 6.2 times more compared to the level of 2018 and amounted to 1340.4 tons. Compared to the level of 2018, the yield of cereals (including rice) and legumes in weight after processing increased by 45.2% and amounted to 8.5 C / ha.
